The prospect of waking up on Friday morning to find Starmer heading into No 10 Downing Street is too grim to contemplate. The damage he and his chums will wreak on the country, the economy, our greatest institutions, and the independence we fought so hard to gain by exiting the EU, as they squander the opportunities and freedom gained through Brexit, will be terrible.
Those who think the country is in a mess now following the pandemic, the cost-of-living crises, and the war in Ukraine, will be nothing compared to the mess Starmer will create over the next five years’, if not before, if he gets the keys to No 10.
David Dimbleby said last weekend, “It’s the quality of today’s crop (of politicians) that has declined.” He is quite right across all political parties, although there are of course some exceptions. But look at the choice of leaders – is that the best the country can come up with?
So, what are we left with? There are many excellent hard-working MPs who work night and day representing their constituents. I do wonder why anyone would want to become an MP in today’s world unless this really is their calling. They get paid peanuts, the hours they keep are gruelling, they work most weekends, the toll on family life and the intrusion from the press and media, and increasingly social media, is relentless and in many cases destructive.
The chance of being promoted to a ministerial job, leading to the Cabinet is remote, and only adds to their workload if it does happen. There they will find a mix of talents some being mediocre, others useless. Also, a lack of leadership skills or experience regarding their brief. This was evident as Boris stepped up to rally the troops this week. His charisma, rhetoric and leadership skills were obvious and just go to highlight the lack of these qualities amongst the hierarchy of the party.
We have been fortunate in Sussex to have some exceptional MPs which is why it is vital to support and vote for the candidates who have been reliable, hardworking and dedicated to the job in hand. My local MPs Maria Caulfield, and Mims Davies and others, are worth their weight in gold.
No one should be swayed by calls to vote tactically which could result in excellent hard-working MPs losing their seat to some inexperienced shoe-in who is more interested in ‘ousting the conservatives’ and sitting on the green benches than working on behalf of their constituents.
We hear talk of strategic voting amongst the Lib Dems and Greens which is what happened during the District Council elections across Sussex. What we ended up with are some councils being run by inexperienced individuals with political motives but little practical sense or genuine commitment. They haven’t got a clue as to how to manage the budgets, planning, and welfare, let alone getting our dustbins emptied. Do we really want to repeat this on a national scale? Let us hope the British public understand the long-term implications and how important it is to think very carefully before placing that powerful X in the box.
