As the dust settles it is now time to move on, and for those disappointed by the result, they will soon realise just what a lucky escape we have had.
Had Remain won, we would today be facing deeper integration, and more power handed to a few unelected EU commissioners, according to Jean-Claude Juncker.
On Friday, the President of the European Commission, stated that he was grateful to the UK for demonstrating how impossible it is to ‘control’ 28 countries, by allowing them to all have a democratic voice.
He now intends to change the organisation so the unelected commissioners have total control over all European Union countries, by choosing and approving all directives and legislation. He said this will make it quicker and easier to introduce plans for a European army, more political integration, immigration, and other directives, without having to consult 27 nation states. How democratic is that?
We voted to leave the European Union, not Europe, but against this increasingly anti-democratic, power grabbing, institution. Only London, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain. All the other regions including the North West, West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humberside, East Midlands, Wales and the rest voted to leave.
The commentators have been generous in their praise for David Cameron. They would have had more reason to do so had he declared his intension to stand down with immediate effect. By remaining in office until October, he is doing a disservice to his party and the country. He has no appetite for the job, he backed the wrong horse. He should have allowed his party to choose a new leader now, who could hit the road running, and take control of the negotiations to fast track the UK’s exit from the European Union.
As a country we shall now become stronger and safer, and hopefully a new kind of politics will also emerge. For too long we have been ‘governed’ by people fighting for the middle ground. First Blair, and latterly Cameron, the heir to Blair.
The people who have been ignored, and been taken for granted, are proper Conservatives, and solid, principled Labour voters. These are the people who swung the vote to leave. They have by doing so restored our pride in Great Britain, and our sovereignty and democracy, and rescued the country from the iron grip of Brussels.
The London elite are now trying to divide the nation by calling for a second vote. They say only the old, unintelligent and grumpy voted to leave, and all the young voted to remain. This is clearly untrue as many young did not vote, and many voted to leave, including young farmers, fishermen and entrepreneurs with small companies. Many struggling not to drown under mountains of useless EU legislation and directives. Leave won, get over it.
Both the Conservatives and Labour need strong leadership. Leaders who recognise how important it is to embrace this great opportunity to now trade with 2.2 billion people worldwide, rather than just 500 million in the EU.
The conservatives must engage with all those who worked hard to achieve this result, including all the high profile Vote Leave team. Also Daniel Hannan MEP, who played such a pivotal role, and has much to bring to the negotiating table, and indeed Westminster. His cool, calm, and highly intelligent approach will be invaluable.
My money goes on Andrea Leadsom emerging as the favourite front runner to replace David Cameron. She has been a new star on the campaign trail, and has already gained public admiration and a huge following. I hope she will grab the baton and run with it, fully supported by her fellow MPs and the party.
Nicolas Sturgeon is planning to hold a second Independence Referendum in Scotland, as she wants to remain within the European Union. Well, she had better hurry up as the Euro will soon collapse, shortly followed by the disintegration of the EU, as France, Austria, Finland, the Netherlands, and Hungary are all calling for referendums on their membership, and no doubt others will follow. The EU experiment is over.
